My approach to painting involves bringing order out of chaos to arrive at a unique image. To begin, I use random marks, color, and texture to establish a varied surface, with no particular subject in mind. Then, by automatically inventing and critically arranging, I begin to find design and form that speaks to me. This is developed intuitively and deliberately and is informed by my past visual experiences and memories. Hints of reality may occur but are not allowed to move beyond vague suggestions. The resulting structure becomes the subject of the painting.
The drawings generally are done in a similar fashion. Random tones and marks are introduced with no preconceived ideas in mind. Then, through an intuitive process of adding darks as well erasing (reverse drawing), a structure begins to assert itself. As in the paintings, this arises out of past visual remembrances.
